The figure comes and goes in my work. Sometimes it's just a silhouette. Being married to a contemporary dancer has it's influence plus being a massage therapist for many years has sharpened my observation of the body.

Emperor's delight
2004
Oil on Canvas
1015mm x 1370mm.
Reverent in its spiritual opulence and free in its abandonment, 'Empereor's delight' is a big "come on" fit for an Emperor. It is celebration life as a dance full of richness and sensuality as silouetted figures prance and preen within cells; part angels, part exotic dancers. In many respects these figures are agents for energy and light transference across the picture plane and capturing the potent colour of seduction is my aim.

Maori folklore has it that it was their forefathers' observations of the Godwit-a migratory bird flying south non-stop from Alaska-that led them to become the first human inhabitants of New Zealand. Possibly we are here because of these birds;simply waiting and observing the next change in the tide.
